Roblox has been home to some of the most exciting and innovative metaverse experiences over the past couple years, but it doesn’t actually design and build these experiences — rather, the platform relies on a network of developer partners who work with brands, artists, etc. to make their vision come to life.
As the metaverse continues to expand and reach more people, investor interest is also continuing to grow in the space. Most recently, MELON, one of the leading Roblox metaverse studios, which has developed Roblox experiences for the NFL, Chipotle, and big-name music artists, has announced a $5 million seed round.
The round included Crush Ventures, the investment arm of Crush Music, as well as Gaingels, Comcast Spectacor, and a large SPV led by Matt Finick, former CFO at Roblox and Marvel Entertainment, who has also joined MELON’s board.
"MELON is at the forefront of the creative explosion happening in the metaverse,” said investor/board member Matt Finick. “They are perfectly positioned to build some of the most impactful experiences across music, film and TV, fashion, and sports over the next few years of critical growth on these developing platforms.”
MELON’s team includes people who previously worked at major game studios including EA and Pokémon GO along with experienced producers and marketers. Among the artists that MELON has worked with for virtual Roblox performances are Tai Verdes, Ava Max, and Zara Larsson, with the latter’s event winning the studio a Clio award this year.
“We’re extremely fortunate to have such a strong collective of early strategic investors in MELON,” added MELON co-founder/co-CEO Josh Neuman. “The Metaverse and platforms within it are ripe for disruption and we’re looking forward to evolving our creativity and storytelling in collaboration with our partners, as well as via our original IP. With this group, we’re going to be able to strategize and navigate the evolving landscape at the highest level.”
